Here is a letter that we thought we'd share with you from one of our favorite 'old timers' of the 44, Frank Detmer:

Hey Yo! Jack, Desi….Desi, Jack… Who gets top billing anyway?

It’s not like I’m not depressed enough but when your letter pops up, it saddens me to see more of us kick the bucket. Hard to believe Frank Geraghty’s son passed. He had to be a young man, and Timmy Manning… what a quiet soft gentleman. Believe me on this one, I saw John Mc Gowan in my dreams, always a smile on his face and easy to talk to. I remember Dye & Mc Gowan - Roll Call.

Well we’ve seen the best of times and history. The 60’s & 70’s were a great time to be “on the job”. Some sadness, great laughs and Men had balls. Oh you had your backstabbers, ass-lickers, brown-nosers, cowards, etc. but even they seem to be a cut above what’s out there today. I can truly say I worked with men, and fine men. Maybe a little rough around the edges but all were characters and had great personalities. I watched guys do 20 years round the clock, in uniform, on the street without bitching and moaning. Put their 20 in and walk out the door and most did great in their second lives. Truly great credits to the NYPD.

Well enough bitching & moaning from me. I hope to possibly make that reunion in Pompano and see if I can recognize anybody. Did you ever quietly say to yourself after not seeing someone in 25 to 30 years, “Just what the fuck did you do to yourself?” and of course they’re thinking that of me. God we can be so cruel.

In closing, I’d like to say, Jack, Desi, and Mike who's gone……Thanks for keeping our thing going. Very few if any jobs have this. It was an education, a privilege and a pleasure working with most and all have left an imprint within my heart and subconscious. For now, I bid you all Adieu, Sayonara, Adios, Chow, Hasta la Vista Baby!

My Sincerest,

Frank D

P.S. Spoke to Neil Arfman – Doing well. Joe Martucci – said he’s always working out pumping Iron!

On August 8th, more than 90 of our finest from different precincts gathered at Kennelly’s Grille House in Congers, NY to share the day and recognize Don Collopy for his years of service and camaraderie.  We at the 44 Forever Club would like to thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to come out and contribute to the occasion.

Don was in fine spirits and had a great day as well.  Below is the letter he sent to the 44 Club to thank all of you:

Dear Desi, Jack and all members of The 44 Forever Club:

I only wish that my vocabulary was such that I could adequately express my sincere appreciation for the wonderful day you gave me on August 8th.   It was a day the memory of which I will treasure forever.  Even though I had a little trouble breathing I was able to get through the day ok.

I am truly fortunate and Blessed to have worked in such a great job and grateful to have so many wonderful friends.

Thank you all from the very bottom of my heart and may God Bless you all.  You will forever be in my prayers.
